AFTT to feature Tribute to Ousmane Sembène

Fresh off the Press!

The Africa Film Trinidad and Tobago (AFTT) in association with the University of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine Film Programme will dedicate the African Classics segment of the Film Festival to African filmmaker, trade unionist, human right advocate and “father of African cinema” Ousmane Sembène from the 26th – 28th July, 2016 at the UWI Film Studio, 12 Carmody Street, St Augustine commencing 7:00p.m.

Ousmane Sembène, is the first film director from an African country to achieve international recognition and remains the major figure in the rise of an independent post- colonial African cinema. The Senegalese director focused his films on social, economic, and political themes as he advocated for various issues of the people of his continent. Sembène is known for highlighting the power and struggle of women; and drawing global attention to African characters’ beauty, pain and humanity. His last and deeply political film Moolaadé (2005) addresses the female genital mutilation that impact women across Africa.

The AFTT Classics: Salute to Sembène are three (3) nights of great cinema featuring some of Sembène’s best films. Each night will be filled with exciting movies that highlights the legendary filmmaker’s contributions to Africa cinema which include: his first feature length film Black Girl; the short film Borom Sarret; the political film Moolaadé and a documentary of his life Sembène!

The screening dates of the films are:

  • Tuesday 26th July, 2016  at 7:00 pm–  Borom Sarret (1963) and Black Girl (1966)
  • Wednesday 27th July, 2016 at 7:00 pmMoolaadè (2005)
  • Thursday 28th July, 2016 at 7:00 pm – Sembène! (2015)
