New Traditions Festival 2016 by Dance Caribbean Collective

Dance Caribbean COLLECTIVE Presents New Traditions Festival 2016 JUNE 11 & 12

(New York, NY) June 1, 2016- In honor of Caribbean-American Heritage Month, Dance Caribbean COLLECTIVE presents its second annual, New Traditions Festival 2016: Dance Your Caribbean, on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 7:30pm and Sunday, June 12, 2016 at 6pm. Both performances take place at Gelsey Kirkland Arts Center, 29 Jay Street, Brooklyn, New York 11201. Tickets are available online at dccnewtraditions2016.bpt.me for $25.

Candace Thompson, Founding Director states that, ‘We are committed to presenting concert dance works rooted in Caribbean cultural traditions and experiences. There’s so much cultural knowledge available that we want to connect directly to the Caribbean-American community through workshops, classes and education programs. We want our people to feel close to the art that we are making in their honor.’

The festival season has included:

  • DCC Diaspora Dance Series: a series of dance workshops in various Caribbean Dance forms and fitness styles open to the public, that to give greater visibility to instructors sharing Caribbean culture. (March 17 – May 12 at Brooklyn Studios for Dance)
  • A mentorship and feedback program designed to support the New Traditions Festival choreographers through the creation process.
  • New Traditions Masterclass series that presents Caribbean Contemporary Dance techniques and repertory classes. Our first Masterclass, Dances of Jamaica & the Caribbean was led by Christopher Walker on May 29 in partnership with Cumbe Dance.
  • New Traditions Artist Residency Barter Program: A program designed to provide our choreographers with rehearsal space and in turn give workshops to the Caribbean-American population (primarily youth) through collaborations with various community and education-based organisations in West Indian communities.

Leading up to:

Two Evenings of Performances at the New Traditions Festival 2016: Dance Your Caribbean! that include a post-show discussion each night and a pre and post-show reception, on alternating nights of the festival.

Our 2016 roster features Facing Home: Love and Redemption, the work of Jamaican choreographers, Christopher Walker, dancer and choreographer for National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica and professor at University of Wisconsin at Madison, and Kevin A. Ormsby, former Fagan dancer, now Director of Kashedance, which explores the global impact of Bob Marley’s music and the culture of homophobia in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. The festival will also present local choreographers Jessica St. Vil (Haiti/USA), Maxine Montilus (Haiti/USA), Safi Harriott (Jamaica/USA), Shola Roberts (Grenada/USA) and Dance Caribbean COLLECTIVE Founder, Candace Thompson (Trinidad and Tobago).
